QUT Victorious Again!

October 7th, 2008

Once again, QUT Has dominated the Australian Uni Games, picking up Gold in the Men’s division one and division two competitions.

The QUT Women’s volleyball team was unlucky to miss out on the medals after an injury to star player Jordan Mowen during the week.  Nevertheless, the team played extremely well in the Bronze medal match, taking the University of Sydney to five sets despite starting as vicious underdogs.  Congratulations must go to the girls for how well they played in this and all their other matches.

The Men’s division two team met Monash in the gold medal match, playing some solid volleyball to take them out in three close sets.  QUT was beaten by Monash in four sets earlier in the tournament and were extremely proud to turn it around for a victory.

The Men’s division one team met a lacklustre Sydney University in the gold medal match, easily coming away with a 3-0 win.  Our first men’s team team dropped only a single set in the entire tournament, helped in no small part by some creative (illegal but funny) plays.

The Men’s division one win takes QUT to four championships in a row.  We’re really looking forward to next year where we’ve got high hopes of rounding out the five.

Second Again!

May 15th, 2008

Once again, QUT has been foiled at the last minute, losing the gold medal match at the annual Flaming Chalice tournament.

This time, it was the visitors from PNG who took the final game despite QUT beating them the previous day to progress straight through to the finals.

So well done to PNG, and hopefully we’ll get that gold medal next year.

Flaming Chalice

April 30th, 2008

The Dragons’ Flaming Chalice competition is on again this weekend and QUT Men have managed to scrape together a team.

Because of the limited availability of many of our players, it’s going to be a hard slog to get a good result this year.  We only have a few people available to us on Saturday afternoon and evening and that’s when all the preliminary games are.

Version 1.0 of the draw is on the Dragons website, but the commitments for QUT are as follows:

Time Commitment Court GameNo Opponent
Sat 3:30pm Game 2 220 Dragons Red
Sat 5:50pm Game 2 222 The Barbarians
Sat 7:00pm Duty 2 223
Sat 8:10pm Game 1 124 Titans

Note that there will be crossover games on Sunday somewhere between 1pm and 7pm, and also on Monday between 8:30am and 2:30pm.  The times will depend completely on how we do on Saturday.

Keep an eye on the website to see how we’re doing!

AUS Team of the Year 2007

December 13th, 2007

Hi all,

Just a quick update to let you know that QUT Mens Volleyball has won the Australian University Sport Team of the Year for 2007!

From the Australian University Sport website:

The purpose of this award is to acknowledge the achievements of the best University Team in Australia, assessed on university sport performances as well as contributions made to university sport during the nominated year. This team must be made up of student athletes from a single university.

This is the first time that a team from QUT has won this award (or any award at this level), so we should be very proud. It’s a testament to all the hard work you’ve put in this year.

November 4th, 2007

Hey all,

Just a quick congratulations to the Men’s Volleyball team on our QUT Team of the Year award!

Three years of hard slog and domination has paid off!  I’m uploading videos as we speak, and I’ll put them on this site when I’m done.

Good work kids,

Uni Games Wrap Up

October 5th, 2007

Hi everyone,

Well it’s taken me way too long to write this. Frankly it’s because I couldn’t admit to myself that it was over. Writing a post that “summarises” uni games means that it’s over.

Anyway, as I’m sure you’re all aware, we did well. Very well. The results for Volleyball are:

  • Men Team 1 (Ligers) - Gold
  • Men Team 2 (Tions) - 4th
  • Women Team 1 (Lightning) - Gold
  • Women Team 2 (Thunder) - Silver
  • Men Beach Pairs - Gold
  • Women Beach Pairs - Gold, 4th, 7th, 12th
  • Mixed Beach 4s - Bronze

So I’m very very proud of you kids!

In other news, we’ll be having plenty of catch-up drinks to remember things like Macca’s g-string, Tino’s pole-dancing, Jonesy’s coathanger, Shanas’ testicles, and the Invincibles. The first one is on this Saturday night (6th of October) at the Normanby.

So if you’re like me and have been shedding a tear every time you hear a Timbaland song or getting strange looks when you tell someone they’re funny money, then you’ll be hanging out for it.
