Aussie Domination!!

April 18th, 2007

Hey all,

QUT Volleyball returns victorious from across the sea!

Our tour was nothing short of a domination as we dropped only a single set in our games against the Kiwis. While some of the games were tight (particularly the last few), our consistency and attack could not be beaten.

On the final day, our final against Otago University was moved forward so that an exhibition match could take place. Once we had completed our win against Otago, the tournament directors selected a “Tournament Team” consisting of the best players from each of the New Zealand universities. QUT was pitted against this “super-team” and triumphed 3-0.

There’s undoubtedly some interesting stories that will have come from this tour but I’ll leave that to you guys to post. Just reply to this email with your memories! And to save Macca some typing (again): “Rookie, should have said the same, choice eh bro, funny money, matt damon”.

So a big congratulations to all the guys who travelled with us and took the court in the name of our fine university. A big thanks must also go out to those who supported us. Obviously we’d like to thank our sponsors who helped cover our costs and kitted us out with probably the best jerseys I’ve seen on a volleyball court anywhere ever. Also thanks to those touch and squash players who came and supported us during our games. Last but not least, a big thanks to Package, the man with the slapper bus who was happy to drop what he was doing and come and pick us up, no matter where we were whether it be the courts, the hospital, or the beach that would have led to hospital.

Good work, thanks to everyone, and bring on the AUS three-peat!

More Info about the Games

April 2nd, 2007

Hey all,

I thought I’d give you a bit more info about what’s going on with the actual volleyball in New Zealand.

  • There are six teams in the Mens indoor competition (including us).  The others are:
    • AUT University
    • Canterbury University
    • Otago University (winners the last two years)
    • Victoria University (two teams)
  • Last year there were 7 teams and each team only seemed to play about 4 games over the two days.  The days this year run later than last year, so hopefully there’ll be a bit more game time this year.
  • I’m waiting on information about whether we are allowed to take gold, and whether our players can be selected in the “Tournament Team” (like our merit team).  I’m also waiting on info about the libero rule in NZ and the sub rule (although I assume it’s 6 per set).
  • There are 17 teams in the Mens beach competition (including our 4).  You don’t really care who the others are so I won’t tell you.  There are also 17 in the Womens beach competition including our one team.
