Aussie Domination!!

April 18th, 2007

Hey all,

QUT Volleyball returns victorious from across the sea!

Our tour was nothing short of a domination as we dropped only a single set in our games against the Kiwis. While some of the games were tight (particularly the last few), our consistency and attack could not be beaten.

On the final day, our final against Otago University was moved forward so that an exhibition match could take place. Once we had completed our win against Otago, the tournament directors selected a “Tournament Team” consisting of the best players from each of the New Zealand universities. QUT was pitted against this “super-team” and triumphed 3-0.

There’s undoubtedly some interesting stories that will have come from this tour but I’ll leave that to you guys to post. Just reply to this email with your memories! And to save Macca some typing (again): “Rookie, should have said the same, choice eh bro, funny money, matt damon”.

So a big congratulations to all the guys who travelled with us and took the court in the name of our fine university. A big thanks must also go out to those who supported us. Obviously we’d like to thank our sponsors who helped cover our costs and kitted us out with probably the best jerseys I’ve seen on a volleyball court anywhere ever. Also thanks to those touch and squash players who came and supported us during our games. Last but not least, a big thanks to Package, the man with the slapper bus who was happy to drop what he was doing and come and pick us up, no matter where we were whether it be the courts, the hospital, or the beach that would have led to hospital.

Good work, thanks to everyone, and bring on the AUS three-peat!

More Info about the Games

April 2nd, 2007

Hey all,

I thought I’d give you a bit more info about what’s going on with the actual volleyball in New Zealand.

  • There are six teams in the Mens indoor competition (including us).  The others are:
    • AUT University
    • Canterbury University
    • Otago University (winners the last two years)
    • Victoria University (two teams)
  • Last year there were 7 teams and each team only seemed to play about 4 games over the two days.  The days this year run later than last year, so hopefully there’ll be a bit more game time this year.
  • I’m waiting on information about whether we are allowed to take gold, and whether our players can be selected in the “Tournament Team” (like our merit team).  I’m also waiting on info about the libero rule in NZ and the sub rule (although I assume it’s 6 per set).
  • There are 17 teams in the Mens beach competition (including our 4).  You don’t really care who the others are so I won’t tell you.  There are also 17 in the Womens beach competition including our one team.

Sponsor thanks

March 28th, 2007

Hey everyone,

This is just a quick message to acknowledge our sponsors for the New Zealand Uni Games tour. You can find them in our Sponsors page.

With their help, we’ve managed to arrange an entire playing kit for this tour including new playing shirts and shorts. Our sponsors feature prominently on this gear and I’m sure we’ll get noticed on court for the uniforms as well as our amazing volleyball ability (except for Rags who will only get noticed for his chiselled body).

So a big thanks to our sponsors. Thanks to you guys, this trip looks like being a whole new level of awesome.

Indoor and Beach in NZ

February 8th, 2007

Hey guys,

I received an email from the NZUG organisers via Package letting me know that they run both indoor and beach at the NZ uni games and we can play both!  The message went something like this:

Just so you know our Volleyball competition is a two day comp and runs Wed & Thurs. Our Beach Volleyball is a one day comp and runs on Friday and all Indoor players can enter it FOC, its Male and Female pairs only.

So yeah, beach on the Friday free of charge (FOC)! So obviously, I think we should pair our touring party up, and try to win another sport!

New Zealand

January 19th, 2007

Hey guys and gals,

Hopefully by now you’re all well aware of the tour to New Zealand from Tuesday 10th to Friday 13th of April. It’ll cost around $1000 for the trip, and you’ll need to start getting money together for plane tickets pretty soon. You can probably get your return airfares for around $420 or so including taxes.

I have a few guys who are definites at this point, but unfortunately not a whole team. At the moment the only people I’m 100% sure are coming are myself, Shanas, and LG. If you want to be added to this list, let me know very soon.

For the girls, I’m not sure whether we’ll get enough for an indoor team. They do have beach volleyball at the games though, so let me know if you’re keen for that.

To be safe, I’ll assume you’re probably not coming until you’ve bought your plane ticket. If you haven’t done that by the end of February, I won’t be counting on you at all. Shanas, LG and I have tentatively decided to leave Brisbane on Saturday the 7th, and return on Sunday the 15th.

In terms of how much of the cost can be covered fundraising and sponsorship, expect to pay for your airfares at least. Shanas and I are onto a few money-making ideas so we’ll see what we can do about the rest. To be safe, work on the assumption that we won’t get any money, then you’ll be right when we do. On this point as well, if you know any company who’d like to chuck in some dollars, put them onto myself or Shanas, or at least let us know.

So let me know if you’re a definite and we’ll start organising. Hopefully once we know who is keen, we can all have a meeting (with alcohol of course) to talk about how it’s going to go.
